The shows were met with high enthusiasm as adoring fans came in by the thousands. No mention of Mo in the way of songwriting, however.)Ģ014 is teeming with promise of yet more wonderful Mythology concerts.Last summer, Gladys Knight conquered North America with her national tour. ![]() (For context, Barry noted Maurice's love of technology and gadgets, during the memoriam thus far. Perhaps, For Whom The Bell Tolls is an exception to that reference. It is unclear though, if by "half" he meant the overall amount, or per song. After noting Robin's moods and being a "chart freak", "hit records freak", Barry then muttered quickly, "Thank goodness we wouldn't have written half the we did, if it hadn't been for him". There was such a moment from Mythology concert at Birmingham. Given Barry's immense generosity to highlight Robin's vocals in songs he wrote alone, what to make of a lingering sense of strife at times, as he reminisced their partnership? I missed Barry's interview about writing the chorus, presumably from melody to full music and lyrics. Happy birthday and may 2014 be another great year for you and the family. His presence as a rock guitarist of considerable esteem also serves as a reminder of the full spectrum of genres the brothers wrote in with his live versions of Maurice’s brilliant swamp-rock solo song On Time being one of the many highlights from the Mythology concerts of 2013. Stephen has spent many years playing lead guitar in hard-rock and heavy-metal bands and these days tours with his father, providing a compelling counterpoint to the music of the Bee Gees. December 1st marks the birthday of Barry’s eldest child, Stephen Gibb and this is the big 4-0. ![]() One of my favourites, here is For Whom The Bell Tolls. But so too are You Win Again, Wish You Were Here, Ordinary Lives, Happy Ever After, The Longest Night, Sprits Having Flown, Too Much Heaven, Guilty, Woman In Love, Hold Me, You And I, Islands In The Stream, Chain Reaction, Alone, Immortality, Heartbreaker, Nothing Could Be Good, Don’t Fall In Love With Me, Rings Around The Moon, Blue Island, Man On Fire etc etc etc. So is it the finest post- Fever Bee Gees song? The realisation of the song’s large structural and production aspirations, coupled with the emotion of the lyrics means it is up there for me. Regardless, this is a song which doesn’t just come across as merely good or catchy, it’s patently sad while still sounding big. Regarding the subject matter, there are aspects of the lyrics that sound like they could be written about baby brother Andy who’d died five years earlier, but the reality is more likely to be of a romantic love lost. As with so many Gibb songs like Nights On Broadway, Massachusetts, Please Don’t Turn Out The Lights, How Can You Mend A Broken Heart, I’ve Gotta’ Get A Message and to a more subtle extent You Win Again, much of the magic is in the vocal interplay between Barry and Robin and then the three-part harmonies with Maurice. I asked Barry in a 2009 interview about For Whom The Bell Tolls and I remember him telling me that when the chorus came to him he knew instantly it would sound nice with brother Robin singing lead. ![]() The choruses (with Barry and Maurice on harmonies) are the sort of blue-eyed soul that Robin did so well, matched with the lyrics: Listen closely to For Whom The Bell Tolls (and preferably the full five minute album version and not the inferior single edit) and hear the use of Barry’s falsetto, then natural voice and then Robin in natural voice singing so high it would be in Barry’s (lower) falsetto range. One of two songs the brothers wrote that lifted a title from Hemingway (the other being Islands In The Stream), For Whom The Bell Tolls is the best of what the pop ballad can be: a massive hook, an unforgettable title, an emotional lyric and expert song-craft. ![]() Particularly in the States where the song was ignored by radio programmers due to the idiotic lingering of the Saturday Night Fever backlash, many American fans are surprised at both how good 90s Bee Gees music was and also that it was so successful. It is a track for me which I will never stop trying to introduce to people because as much as it was a big hit, it gets lost a little in the depths of the Gibb catalogue. The Brazilians, however, knew more than anybody that For Whom The Bell Tolls wasn’t just a nice song and it made it all the way to #1 there. As it turned out, the brothers had to settle for a very respectable UK #4 chart peak, as well as top 10 placings in various other European territories. This November marked 20 years since the Bee Gees released one of the strongest ballads of their career with a song that – had it not been for the likes of Mr Blobby – may’ve even been a UK Christmas #1.

I will possibly post a critical interpretation upon the character of Willy Loman at a later date, but for now: I decide to do this question as I could generally avoid a political regime and debate as that does not even remotely interest me. However, he is unethical in business and his sexual dalliances are bad for business and his career.I apologize for my lack of posts this past month, or two, you would not believe my work load! Here is a critical analysis of my DOAS essay, it is only a first draft, but already 200 words over the word limit. Happy is driven to succeed and is willing to give in to any societal pressures which enable his success. Where Biff is the more sensitive side of Willy, Happy would appear to be Willy’s more rational and practical side. He has been over-shadowed by Biff his entire life and compensates for his sense of inadequacy by being sexually promiscuous and professionally ambitious. She stands by him during his final collapse in the play, but we see a sense of relief come over with Willy’s death. While she can be taken in by Willy’s dreams and idealism, she is also much more realistic and sees through Willy’s self-delusions. She is devoted and loving, but she show signs of having endured Willy’s dreams and failures. There are profound conflicts between Biff and Will which they are not able to reconcile. He abaondons the dreams his father has for him and heads out west. Biff is prone to impulsiveness and emotion. Biff would represent Willy’s more sensitive and creative side. He also seems to have a tendency to steal things, suggesting a similar mental illness problem to his father. He also had good prospects for a college scholarship, but because he failed math, he was not able to graduate. He is popular with both friends and with women. The conflict between social pressures and personal realities make up the central themes of the play. He suffers from a kind of dementia and despair which make him suicidal. He is also profoundly disappointed in his sons who have not lived up to his unrealistic expectations.Īs the realities of his life close in him, his failure to succeed, his past mistakes, and his disappointment sin his family, he begins to lose touch with reality. While he seems to believe in the dream of a rise to success in business and the wealth which comes with that, these things have alluded him. The protagonist of the play, Willy is characterized by insecurities and general illusions about life. The other two major hymns follow the same approach of the Philippian’s, while noting the continuities and the innovations at different levels. Among other things they did were to provide an arrangement of the hymn in strophes, argue for its pre-Pauline material, its redaction particularly with the phrase “even death on a cross,” its conceptual background, etc. He identifies three major scholars in the discussion of the development of this hymn: Ernst Lohmeyer, Ernst Käsemann and Ralph Martin. Before delving into the analysis of the hymn, the author exposes its scholarship which touches on the exegesis of key phrases and terms, origin, authorship, structure, significance within the letter, its background, social context and theological analysis. Gordley notes some general features about this hymn that: 1) it is constructed in Jewish psalm style, 2) it is imbedded with some key Jewish and Greco-Roman motifs, 3) the story is about Jesus, and 4) it is directed to a community that seeks for an identity in the midst of the challenges in their environment. The Philippian hymn presents Jesus’ humiliation and exaltation in a rich manner which has caught the attention of scholars. He opines that it is necessary to understand the broad ancient category of hymn which includes prose and poetry, freestanding song and literary praise of gods so as to be able to recognize New Testament hymns and to avoid dismissing them that they do not fit a particular aspect of ancient conceptions of hymnody.Īfter examining the background and the key features of the ancient context of early Christian worship, the author takes up the analysis of the New Testament hymns beginning with the first three major ones: Phil 2, Col 1 and John 1. The New Testament hymns show that Jesus is praised for his divine origin, exceptional accomplishments and divine honors, while also providing a kind of resistance to the Roman imperial ideology and meet the needs of the present community. In their hymns of praise, the early Christians align with these practices of antiquity, but at the same time diverge from them. They help to shape the hearers and community’s worldview. They had the role of bringing their audience into an encounter with ultimate reality. ![]() Hymns were used in the praise of the divine (gods or divinized rulers) by poets and hymnographers. This shows that the practice of hymns was widespread in antiquity. Here, he discusses hymns in their rhetoric, style and content, and collections of hymns preserved from the ancient world. He is consistent in situating this analysis within the cultural matrices of Greco-Roman hymnody and early Jewish worship with specificity on the Second Temple period. In his analysis of these hymns, he provides a comparative analysis with respect to their culture, literary and theological contexts, while noting the continuities and innovations brought about. With special attention to the features that make the passages (under exploration) hymnic, the author is more convinced especially when they are viewed in light of the conventions of ancient Jewish and Greco-Roman hymnody. It is obvious that he limited his expression to the three passages he is concerned with. Matthew Gordley does not explicitly show that this could make a passage representing pre-existing material, he is prudent by admitting that the high concentration of these features “that are also shared by a selection of texts across the spectrum of New Testament writings” could make one say that Phil 2, Col 1 and John 1 “were written in such a way that they draw on specific kinds of traditional material” (p. 31). But when these criteria are objectively and broadly considered within a text, one must be confronted with a question: how does one explain this unique difference within the context of the passage? The high concentration of these features and the presence of the criterion of multiple attestations within the New Testament writings is a high sign of the presence of pre-existing material. Other critics include Ralph Brucker, Peppard Michael. A scholar like Fowl Stephen, for example, dwells on two criteria, namely, uniqueness of vocabulary and evidence of redaction based on stylistic abnormalities. The shortcoming on the part of the critics is that they do not consider the criteria as a whole but choose some and argue only for them. |
